Academic Credit for International Internships

Global Experiences' international internship programs can easily complement a student's academic degree program. If that is your path, there are many options for gaining credit for your internship abroad program and accessing financial aid if applicable. Our team is experienced and ready to help with any questions relating to gaining credit for your experience abroad.

Are you required or encouraged to take an internship for your degree program? Work with your university academic advisor to confirm how many credits you can receive for a GE internship program in the summer or semester.

School of Record

School of Record

Participants who cannot earn academic credit directly through their university can enroll with Global Experiences for up to 12 transfer credits. Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a transcript from our School of Record, Fairfield University.

Faculty Led Programs

Faculty Led Programs

Some customized Global Experiences programs are offered with a faculty leader from a college or university. If a specific course is offered, you'll see it noted in the course description or on our website. This is most often the case with short term programs in January or May.

No Academic Credit

No Academic Credit

Already graduated or completed an internship for credit? No problem. All participants have the option to take the program without receiving academic credit. Note that some universities require credit, so be sure to check with your academic advisor if you are still in school.

Full Semester & Full Summer Credit Available

Intern with Global Experiences and receive full summer or semester of academic credit!
Participants can receive up to 12 credits during a summer or semester program. This is done through credit-bearing internships and online coursework. See the course offerings and overview syllabi below. GE is happy to share more detailed syllabi (including a week by week planner) to students and advisors. While there is an additional fee for the credit, it is typically less than at your home institution.

3-6 credits = $600 total | 9 credits = $1,200 total | 12 credits = $1,800 total

GE298: Global Experiences International Internship

3 - 6 Credits – Summer or Semester

Course Overview

The internship provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in workplace settings and to translate classroom learning into practice. The internship is a substantive career development experience. Contributing to decision-making and communicating meaningful ideas while applying learned skills to accomplish the goals of the organization should form the bulk of the work while being mentored by individuals specific to the participant’s primary intended career field. This course is a combination of contact hours of internship combined with journaling, graded reflection pieces and assignments. The average participant interns 32 - 40 hours per week, but contact hours may vary.

GE301: Global Workforce and Leadership Development

3 Credits – Offered Summer or Semester

Course Overview

By the end of this course, students will be better prepared to enter the global workforce as leaders in their career fields. This course is intended to help students gain an understanding of the Attributes Employers Want to See on New College Graduates’ Resumes as defined by industry assessment conducted by the World Economic Forum. Learning and developing these attributes will increase students’ marketability to future global employers, contribute to their leadership capacity and their ability to attain professional success in a global economy.

GE302: Intercultural Communications in a Global Workplace

3 Credits – Offered Summer or Semester

Course Overview

Students will learn to identify culture, cultural differences and how to navigate a multicultural workplace. They will build their own intercultural competence in terms of their own awareness, skills, and knowledge as a necessary basis for learning about communication in the global workplace, especially as it may be applied to their host country and their individual internship experience. Students will have the opportunity to identify underlying cultural concepts and how these impact workplace practices and communication so that they may develop their own competencies in the workplace and apply these new understandings to their own internship experience.

Fairfield University is a private Jesuit university founded in 1942 in Fairfield, Connecticut, well known for their commitment to international education. Fairfield is also a study abroad provider to many other U.S. and global universities and maintain many overseas study centers with the largest in Florence, Italy.

In 2016 Fairfield and Global Experiences partnered to develop a school of record relationship that will allow academic experiential credit to be available for both Fairfield and non-Fairfield students. It is our collective goal that access to credit and financial aid options will increase access and opportunities for students.

Global Experiences offers up to 12 academic credits through Fairfield University for its summer and semester programs.

If your university does not offer academic credit for your internship and you’re looking to earn credit, it's possible that you can receive transfer credit through our School of Record, Fairfield University. Please let us know upon application if you would like to register for credit for your program.

  • The transcript will include Fairfield letter grade and credit
  • The exact transcript notations are listed in each course description
  • Your home institution (typically your academic advisor or study abroad advisor) will determine how the credit transfers back for your coursework
  • Financial Aid available
