Italian Language Training

Each program begins with full time intensive Italian language training in a group environment. This fully accredited course is provided by three of the top Italian Language training institutions in Italy, all of which are recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education and have been in existence for decades. Though many of those who enroll are from the US, participants are from a wealth of other countries around the world, thus providing you an even greater multi-cultural experience.

All levels of Italian training are available and the length of the language training component of the program is dependent upon the length of the full program undertaken. Your language skills will be assessed in the first week of your program so you are placed in the level most applicable to your abilities. Extending the language component is possible throughout the year so please inquire with our staff to learn more.

It is recommended that beginners choose a 2 month language component to get the most out of the internship program. This option is available as part of the 3 and 4 month programs. The 6-month program offers the opportunity to gain near fluency through 3 months of intensive language study and 3 months of practical work experience in an Italian-speaking environment. For those participating in a 2 month program, we are able to accept all level of Italian skills and will work with you to ensure the best balance of intensive Italian and a practical internship that meets your level of experience. We strongly recommend that you enroll in additional individual language training lessons if you have little to no prior Italian language experience. Please review the details below to better understand how internship placements relate to your Italian and professional experience level.

All participants will be issued with a certificate for their Italian class that can then be used to assist with gaining university credits. We can help facilitate university credit with you so please inquire with our staff.

What Should I Expect from an Internship in Italy?

    • Invaluable practical work experience abroad
    • An unparalleled cultural experience
    • Experience that differentiates you from all other applicants in the prospective employment market

How we choose your Internship Placement

A placement with a company or organization in Italy will be based on the following four factors:
    • Your level of Italian proficiency at the end of the language portion of your program. All placements require a minimum level of proficiency, some more than others. Remember the progress that you make in the language is dependent on you!
    • Your past relevant experience and study. Some placements do not require any past experience but many require some formal training, university level study or previous professional experience.
    • The length of time you will be working with the placement company. Generally speaking, the longer your internship placement lasts, the better the placement as the company knows you will be there longer and therefore they will provide more responsibility.
    • The experience you wish to gain from your internship as described in your application form. Please be honest and specific with this section of the application.
Global Experiences uses carefully chosen placement agencies in Rome, Florence and Milan that work with us to provide international work experience for English-speaking young professionals. Once you apply for a program we begin working with the relevant placement companies to secure you an internship.

For most applicants, companies require an in-person interview with the company and staff to ensure a proper match of your skills to their needs. Italian business is very much conducted in person and because of this it is usually not possible to arrange confirmation of internship companies prior to your arrival in Italy. Meetings with our intern coordinator and the placement agency generally take place in the first two weeks of your language study. At that time, you will have the opportunity to discuss your needs based on what has been pre-selected for you. For some internships it may be possible to conduct phone interviews prior to your arrival in Italy.

In general, for those participating in 2 and 3 month programs, an internship company can be secured and confirmed by week 2 or 3 of your first month of language study. For 4 and 6 month programs we make every effort to arrange placement by your second month of language study once we have a better estimation of your Italian language skills.

For internships in very specialized placement areas (ie. Wine exporting, culinary journalism, fashion purchasing, etc.) or for those with minimal language proficiency and/or professional experience when starting a program, the internship search may need to be extended through the final week of your language study. This is done to ensure the best placement for each candidate based on a combination of language and professional skills at the start of the actual internship.

It is important to note that one should have some experience, either academic or professional, in the placement area for which you are applying. This experience is subjective and therefore assessed on a case by case basis. If you are not sure whether you have the minimum experience expected, be sure to inquire with our Program Coordinators.

Global Experiences and its partners work hard to locate internship placements in the first or second area of choice provided on your program application. After completing the interview process, you are expected to accept the position upon receiving the offer by the company (provided that it matches 1 of the 2 internship areas provided on your application). If, after the interview, the company is unable to offer an internship we will provide you with another opportunity to interview with a different company. We will do this for up to a total of 3 placements. Again, we will offer second and third placement options only if circumstances with the first/second placement company arise and the company is unable to accept you after the interview. All position offerings will be communicated in written form (typically by e-mail), and you are expected to accept or decline a position in written form as well. If you decide not to take a position that has been offered, you must state the specific reasons for not accepting the position. If the reasons for turning down an offer are unjustified, Global Experiences is not responsible for finding another placement. Global Experiences and its partners will make every effort to provide the highest quality placements given a participant's experience and expectations; however, should you refuse the third and final placement offered, Global Experiences and partners will not be bound to find any further alternatives. Rest assured that our success rate is extremely high but it is important to understand the placement process fully.

These internships provide an excellent opportunity for you to gain practical international work experience in the field of your choice while affording you the chance to experience the unique wonders Italy has to offer. We monitor the intern's progress for the duration of the program. The participant is also guaranteed a statement of reference from the company upon successful completion of the program.

It is important to note that there is no guarantee of the location of an internship in relation to the city, one's accommodation or the language school. Some placements may require an intern to travel by bus or train each day. This is particularly true of our fashion placements as many of those opportunities are located just outside Florence in Prato, a world centre in fashion design and manufacturing.

Our program coordinators are able to provide examples of what might be available for you based on your specific background. Global Experiences has placed hundreds of Interns in Italy with a wide variety of Italian language and professional skills, matching them with suitable placement companies in:

"I improved my Italian speaking and writing skills immensely. I learned better ways to research and solve problems without being pushed every step of the way. I learned marketing skills and how to market a specific product to potential buyers. This experience has helped me hone down on what I would like to do with my life and in the future. Global Experiences gives you an international business experience that you cannot find elsewhere."

    - Marianela, PR Intern, Italy

"My position in Milan proved to be very challenging and enabled me to fine tune my Italian language skills in a practical work environment. One of the highlights of my position was a business trip to Genoa with the company's Managing Partner. I expect many doors to open in the future thanks to this experience. Global Experiences was great in facilitating my placement, providing an opportunity I may not have found otherwise, and helping me to earn a full semester of university credit from Johnson & Wales."

    University Credit

Global Experiences participants can receive independent study course credit through our university affiliate, Eastern Washington University (EWU). These courses are designed to allow for independent study and require you to delve deeper into your international experience through a series of written observations and academic journals during your time abroad. Upon completion, credits may then be transferred to your university or college.

To learn more about this opportunity through EWU or how else you may be able to receive university credit for your Global Experience, please see our University Credit page.

Please note, depending on your program location, you may be required to pay an additional transcript fee of 50 Euro. This nominal fee covers the extra program monitoring and official transcript preparation required for presentation to your university faculty advisor.

    Obtaining Visas

For American students enrolled in our Italy programs, one must obtain a
study visa. Please keep in mind that the application process is not always
a simple one, and visa requirements vary depending on your state of
residency. If you are an American student interested in any of our Italy
programs, please discuss the details of the Italian visa system with a
    program coordinator.

For UK applicants and others in Europe, as members of the EU, visas are not
needed. If you are an applicant from another English speaking country such
as Australia, Canada, New Zealand or South Africa there are fewer conditions
required for obtaining a student visa. Australian and New Zealand applicants
have the option to apply for a working holiday visa for Italy. Applicants
from other countries should inquire with our program coordinators directly
to determine the visa considerations for their situation.

    * Be sure to inquire with our program coordinators as soon as possible regarding the visa issues as they relate to the program in which you are interested.

For more detailed information on the visa application process please visit:
